HAITI DISASTER RELIEF

Mardi Tindal

United Church Moderator visiting Haiti.
This is what the United Church is doing to help in Haiti

We have sent money through the United Church Of Canada and ACWAM. We have a School in the village of Callebasse. Building homes at this time is a complicated endevour, we are not building homes at this time but through ACWAM are striving to help build a clinic for the people of Callebasse.

During the Earthquake, the Principle of the School fell, Nixon was injured and went to hospital to have an arm or leg set. We understand the School wasn’t badly damaged and the school opened March - 2010.

Our sponsored child as well as others at the school were left homeless following the desaster. We hope to be able to help them and their families with extra monies.

Following the earthquake in Haiti on January 12, 2010 our Charge sent $1,000 to ACWAM. Mittens were knitted and sold for the relief and money forwarded on.
If you would like to help, please send your donation to ACWAM Outreach Ministries, P.O. Box 372, 105 Christina St. S., Sarnia, Ont., N7T 7J2, or pick up an envelope at the back of the Church. Please mark cheque, Haiti Disaster Relief. Note: 100% of donations will be matched by the Canadian Government. Please help in any way you can. There are many organizations in which you can help.

United Church Of Canada response to date to the Haiti crisis

Dear Colleagues,

The United Church is working to respond to the crisis in a timely manner and in accordance with our emergency response mandate and capacity. To date our response has included the following:

-consultation with UCC partners in Haiti as possible

-the immediate allocation of $20,000 from the Emergency Response Fund to be channelled through ACT International

-the launching of a church-wide appeal for donations (appeal posted to the website http://united-church.ca/communications/news/response/100113b)

-a news release sent to news agencies and others, and (imminently) UCC pastoral charges and UCW presidents/vice-presidents

-preparation of a bulletin insert (pending, intended for use this Sunday)

-preparation (pending) of a piece on Haiti to provide some broader context as a means of helping to understand the extent of the devastation and the overall crisis (will be posted to the website)

-consultations (some pending) with sister Canadian churches and the Canadian Foodgrains Bank about possible collaborative emergency aid responses to take advantage of government matching funds

The UCC will take advantage of other response options as they arise and as appropriate.

Good news

The service I use to distribute news releases is offering free
distribution of Haiti related advisories, so we won't have to pay for
the distribution of today's news release.
